Become a Firefighter
Serving in the Mount Uniacke Fire Department can be a lifelong, rewarding experience.
The basic committment for every firefighter begins with training that is held each Tuesday night from 7:00 – 9:00pm, as well as responding to calls when you are available in the community.
Calls are dispatched to firefighters via a 2-way pager system and calls can come in 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and can include medical assists, car fires, structure fires, mutual aid to other fire departments, motor vehicle accidents and many more.
To be eligible to be a volunteer firefighter in the Uniacke & District Volunteer Fire Department, you must be at least 19 years of age, reside in the community of Mount Uniacke, and complete an application including a Medical Assessment Form and a Criminal Record Check. Once you submit your application, criminal record check and medical, you will be interviewed by our membership committee who will in turn present your application to the membership to be voted in as a probationary firefighter.
If you are voted in as a probationary firefighter, you can begin to attend training nights at the hall where you will begin in-house training in topics such as Personal Protective Equipment, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), Ropes and Knots, Ground Ladders, Fire Behaviour, Hoses and Nozzles, Fire Streams, and many more.
Once you have been actively involved in the fire department for approximately one year, you may be eligible to be sent to the NS Firefighter’s School to receive your Firefighter Level 1 certification.
If you are interested in becoming a member, please drop by our fire hall at 654 Highway #1 in Mount Uniacke to pick-up an application. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 12:00 and 1:00 – 5:00.

All initial costs for medical assessments and their related tests as well as the criminal record check are the responsibility of the applicant. Please keep all receipts as these costs will be reimbursed once you are successfully voted in to the department as a probationary firefighter.
